Mass Effect Legendary Edition 2 Discs: What is the second disc used for?

Physical boxed copies of Mass Effect Legendary Edition on PlayStation and Xbox come with a pair of discs. Most modern games only require one, so what’s the deal? Do users need to swap discs when switching between Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3? Here’s an explainer on the ME Legendary Edition two discs situation for those with a hard copy of the remastered trilogy.

What does the second Mass Effect Legendary Edition disc do?

Mass Effect Legendary Edition 2 discs

Players use the second Mass Effect Legendary Edition disc to install data before starting the game. After utilizing disc two, users can access Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 via ME Legendary Edition disc one.

Whether playing on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One the process is the same. Although the Mass Effect games originate from a time when game file sizes were much smaller, combining three large-scale RPGs into one package makes for a lot of data. Throw in a vast majority of the series’ DLC along with numerous improvements, and the second disc isn’t too surprising.

In addition to installing data from disc two, those with an active internet connection may receive a download prompt. Accept the notification to receive the latest updates.

It’s worth noting that, although ME Legendary Edition isn’t native to either platform, the remasters do feature PS5 and Xbox Series X|S enhancements. The download and installation process may take slightly longer on next-gen platforms as a result of the extra features, the details of which are available here.

Xbox Series X offers the best performance available on a console, though, unfortunately, there’s currently an Xbox crashing issue. A recent patch serves to somewhat remedy the problem, though isn’t a surefire solution. Since the developers are already aware of the bug and working on a fix, it shouldn’t be long until ME Legendary Edition works as intended.
