Are the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Servers shutting down?

With all the issues the Star Wars Battlefront 2 servers have had today, many players are wondering if they’re shutting down for good. Since DICE announced that Battlefront 2 would no longer receive updates, the game’s future has been unclear. However, the real issue with the Battlefront 2 servers being down is actually a testament to why EA and DICE may have made a mistake by ending support for the game.

Are the Star Wars Battlefront 2 servers shutting down?

Star Wars Battlefront 1

The Star Wars Battlefront 2 servers aren’t shutting down. Neither EA nor DICE have announced any plans to take the game’s multiplayer offline. In fact, both the original Star Wars: Battlefront games and EA’s first Battlefront all still retain multiplayer functionality.

DICE announced that development would end on Battlefront 2 in mid-2020. The last update, released the day after the announcement, brought the Battle of Scarif map to the game. However, despite the fact that no new content will be released, Battlefront 2 has maintained a strong player base.

Even more, players came to the game today with the free release of Star Wars Battlefront 2: Celebration Edition on the Epic Game Store. Obviously, a large amount of people were enthusiastic about playing the game, so many that it’s been crashing the servers all day.

We very seldomly see studios pick a game back up once they’ve ended development. However, the community’s continued enthusiasm and the increased player count may inspire EA to look at starting support again. Even though all the updates for the game were free, fans have indicated that they’d purchased new DLC if it was produced. However, that may lead to splintering the playerbase, which could have a negative effect.

Despite the rocky start, Battlefront 2 has evolved into a great team-based shooter. Hopefully, EA will be inspired to make the third entry even better, especially since it no longer has exclusive rights to the Star Wars video game license.
