Is Zelda playable in the Breath of the Wild sequel?

It’s difficult to know exactly what Nintendo is up to at the best of times, but it is even more so with The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, which was confirmed to be in development during E3 2019. While we were treated to a (just over) one-minute long teaser trailer, we were left with more questions than answers regarding Breath of the Wild 2. One pertinent question was raised by the teaser trailer: Is Zelda playable in the Breath of the Wild sequel? Will the dreams of a playable BotW 2 Zelda finally come true? There are some important theories pointing towards an answer.

While most of us were left speechless by Nintendo’s shock Breath of the Wild sequel announcement from E3, plenty of you out there took your time to dissect its creepy teaser trailer. Many eagle-eyed fans noticed that Zelda is sporting a new haircut in Breath of the Wild 2. Of course, you could simply write this off as a stylistic choice to help differentiate from the original. You could, however, dig a little deeper into Zelda’s new look.

Zelda could well have shorter hair this time around because she is playable in the Breath of the Wild sequel. As pointed out by Liam Robertson, this could well be the case. Liam argues that Zelda’s new look shorter hair could have been a design choice to help animators and remove texture clipping. He argues that Zelda’s “haircut is a design choice so that [Nintendo] didn’t need to program her hair not to clip her model when you play as her.” This could well prove to be the case. Unfortunately, we won’t know until Nintendo confirm Zelda as a playable character in Breath of the Wild 2 or not.

Nintendo could well have cut Zelda’s hair shorter so clipping is no longer an issue. This doesn’t necessarily mean that she will be playable, however. Legend of Zelda fans have been clamoring for a playable Zelda in a mainline entry for years. There was speculation that it would happen in Breath of the Wild, but it never came to light. Breath of the Wild 2 could offer a playable Zelda, however. It’s time to wait and see what Nintendo has to announce on the matter for now, though. Keep those fingers crossed if you’d like a playable Zelda in the Breath of the Wild sequel.
