Hats grant you an extra life, and after you lose them, you'll be invulnerable for a second or so as well.
Coins stay for a while, so don't rush out to pick them up and get yourself squashed.
Don't waste power-ups by triggering them when there's nothing on the screen - hold back and try to save them for when you need them.
