Breath of the Wild Champions’ Ballad: How to Download Breath of the Wild DLC

Finally, after waiting for months and months without an answer, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s second DLC expansion was announced at The Game Awards 2017 last night with a surprising release date of that same night. That means that it is out right now. Revolving around the story of the four original champions and what occurred 100 years ago, this DLC is sure to answer some much needed questions.

Of course, you need to actually own and download the DLC before you can even do that. Strangely enough, it isn’t  explained well in the Nintendo eShop. You can’t even download it from there; only purchase. Because of this, you may be confused as to how you access The Champions’ Ballad. We’ll tell you how.

How to Purchase Breath of the Wild DLC The Champions’ Ballad

First and foremost, you need to actually own The Champions’ Ballad in Breath of the Wild. If you already own the expansion pass for the game, you can skip to the next section. If you don’t, it’s pretty easy but you have a few options to choose from.

Begin by going to the Nintendo eShop and either searching for Breath of the Wild or going to the recent releases section and selecting it. From there, you have to figure out how you want to purchase The Champions’ Ballad. If you don’t even own the base game, we recommend buying the new Breath of the Wild and expansion pass bundle for $79.98 (check your local price if you’re international).

That will give you the game and both expansions. If you already own the base game, simply go to the main Breath of the Wild eShop page (the $59.99 one) and scroll down to select the expansion pass under downloadable content and purchase it. You can’t buy the two DLC packs separately at this time. Now, for the download itself.

Though it isn’t explained to you outright, it’s really easy to download the Breath of the Wild DLC on Switch. From wherever you are on Nintendo Switch, navigate to the home screen and find Breath of the Wild. Press + (the start button) on it and go to the second tab “software update.”

Select “via the Internet” and confirm. Breath of the Wild will begin downloading the new 1.4.0 update that includes The Champions’ Ballad DLC, so you don’t have to worry about anything else. If it says you have the latest version already, then you are good to go with playing it.
