The Starfield boostpacks, or jet packs, are confusing to use at the start. The game doesn’t clearly tell you what you’re supposed to do to get the boost to work, although there has been gameplay videos of the main character using the backpack to effectively dash through the air. Putting on a backpack will even tell you the type of boost it provides, like a “Basic Boostpack” or “Power Boostpack.” Here’s how to get and unlock boostpacks in Starfield.
How to unlock Starfield boost packs
To unlock Starfield boostpacks, you need to put in at least one rank into the Boost Pack Training skill available in the Tech tree.
You only need to put one skill point into Boost Pack Training for you to be able to maneuver through the air with your jet pack. This will let you essentially hover for a limited amount of time so that you can make ranged attacks with an aerial advantage. If you find that you’re not as precise with boosts as you might like, you might want to put some points into Gymnastics in the Physical tree to lessen the amount of fall damage.
Placing more skill points into Boost Pack Training will make boost expend less fuel while making the fuel regeneration faster. If you feel as though boosting fits with your playstyle, then the final Rank 4 in the skill tree will double the fuel regeneration and cut the fuel expenditure by half.
Many abilities are locked behind skills in Starfield. For instance, the hidden/detected bar in Bethesda’s prior Fallout games is inactive in Starfield until you place one rank into the Stealth skill. And putting one rank into Theft allows you to pickpocket NPCs. Similarly, putting one rank into Piloting will unlock ship thrusters, while Targeting Control Systems unlocks ship targeting functionality.
