Metal Gear Survive for the PS4 debuted to 31,359 units sold in its first week in Japan. This is an underwhelming debut for what was previously one of the most highly-anticipated game franchises.
Metal Gear Survive Sales Flop
The first Metal Gear game since the departure of creator Hideo Kojima only managed to debut at third place in the top twenty software sales chart, according to the most recent Media Create Sales figures. Bandai Namco’s new release Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match appears to be a weapon to surpass Metal Gear as it managed to achieve 46,411 units sold, thereby debuting at second place. In our review for Metal Gear Survive, we gave it a rating of 4 out of 5.
Since its launch in late January, no game has toppled Monster Hunter World from its pedestal atop the top twenty software sales chart. Last week it moved another 53,982, maintaining its position at number one for the fifth consecutive week. This unbreakable winning streak has amounted to a whopping 1,890,273 in total lifetime sales, including Limited and Bundle Editions. It’s no surprise that it broke the record for the fastest game in Capcom history to achieve six million shipments worldwide.
Other new releases that broke into the top twenty software sales chart include Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal for the PS4, as well as Harukanaru Toki no Naka De Ultimate and Tokimeki Restaurant: Project Tristars for the PS Vita. The former debuted fourth place behind Metal Gear Survive with 24,118 units sold while two of the latter games debuted in tenth and sixteenth place, with 8,833 and 4,319 units sold respectively. As usual, no Xbox game has managed to break into the top twenty of the software sales chart in Japan.
There was a surprise in the hardware sales chart last week as the Nintendo Switch toppled the PS4’s six weeks reign on top. The Nintendo Switch grabbed the top spot with 39,696 units sold while the PS4 dropped to second place with 29,392 units sold. The Xbox One family had the worst sales with only 139 and 135 units sold for the Xbox One X and Xbox One respectively.
