MegaModz PS5 Controller Review: ‘Tried-and-true paddle system with a perfect finish’

MegaModz is back again with a new custom controller. After having been impressed with the company’s Xbox Series controller, but a little hesitant to recommend giving the high price tag, I’ve been eager to get my hands on the PS5 variant. Third parties have taken a little longer than you might expect to roll out custom DualSense pads, presumably due to the increase in complexity of components, but now the MegaModz PS5 controller is available with a variety of different tuning options to help players get the most of out of their competitive games. This is my review.

Paddles first

As with most custom controllers, including the MegaModz PS5 pad, the main selling point for me is the paddle setup on the rear. Being able to activate buttons like X and O without taking my thumbs off the right analog stick offers a very real advantage in shooters. For example, in Call of Duty: Warzone, the paddles allow me to simultaneously jump around a corner while maneuvering my aim over an enemy to surprise and kill them. This advantage becomes even bigger in games like Fortnite, where players are constantly adjusting their aim while also jumping and building. Paddles offer a gameplay boost that I can’t go back from.

MegaModz is using a PS5 remap kit that is similar (or the same) as the DIY solution from eXtremeRate. This is a tried and tested add-on that has responsive triggers and a simple-to-use remapping mechanic.

All of the options

In addition to paddles, MegaModz also offers an arsenal of mods and advanced remapping options. While I’m firmly against endorsing mods like Rapid Fire, there are aspects of the system that could work well for those with some common accessibility demands. Continuous Press and Auto Double-Tap stand out as potentially useful options for those who struggle to hold in buttons or make quick successive button presses. For those games with lackluster accessibility options, there could be value here.

Of course, users should be extremely wary of breaching the terms of service across all systems and games they pair their custom controllers with.

For those looking for a fairer configuration that is deemed tournament safe by MegaModz, the “Straight Remap” back buttons option is the way to go. This works as you would expect, with each paddle triggering a stock button and nothing more.

Create your controller

After choosing your performance upgrades, it’s time to then customize the exterior design. The body, back, trim, touchpad, shoulder buttons, d-pad, buttons, and thumbsticks, can all be personalized. There are a huge number of options available here. I decided to go with a full-on Resident Evil theming and it came out even better than I was expecting.

Third parties can sometimes be a bit rough when it comes to modifying controllers, but there are zero marks or scuffs on the MegaModz PS5 pad. It looks pristine and I couldn’t be happier with the finish.

The site’s Controller Creator makes it easy to mix and match options and there’s a visual representation of the changes being made. The price is also clearly displayed, which helps prevent users from going too wild if they have a budget in mind.

MegaModz PS5 Controller Review: The final verdict

At the time of writing, the MegaModz PS5 controller is available starting at $79.99, down from the usual price of $99.99. There’s also a 10% off coupon to bring the price down further. Adding the must-have “Straight Remap” back button upgrade increases the cost by a further $79.99. Add on some reasonable cosmetic upgrades and the price quickly climbs to above $200.

With these premium prices, MegaModz is singling out the more competitive players. I suppose this makes sense, as it’s those players who would be searching for a custom controller in the first place. If the pricing doesn’t send you scurrying, and you don’t fancy DIYing the work yourself, the MegaModz PS5 controller implements a tried-and-true paddle system combined with fantastic cosmetic options that are masterfully put together with a perfect finish.
