The hype surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is at a high, after a new trailer debuted at the Super Bowl 2023. Among all of the chaos going down in the latest teaser, are some heavy hints that not everybody is making it out of this trip around the universe alive. Exactly who will be biting the dust before the credits roll remains to be seen, but we can make some predictions based on everything we’ve been shown so far. Here is whose time might be up as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Who will die in Guardians of the Galaxy 3?
Unless Marvel Studios are trying to divert attention away from who will actually die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s looking very likely that this is Rocket Raccoon’s final outing. The new movie trailer showcases more of the origin story that will be told about the hero, but there is one shot in particular that has everybody concerned: Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, screaming down in anguish while surrounded by what appear to be breathing tubes.
Usually, this could mean anybody is in danger, but the framing of the scene, along with the angle, and the direction in which Quill is looking down as if the patient is atop a table rather than lower down in a hospital bed, all point towards it being Quill’s furry friend.
Of course, there is always the chance of survival. Even if this does turn out to be Rocket, he may make it out of there alive. Which begs the question, who else is in danger of dying? A Twitter user, who claims to be an insider and official source, says that Drax is the “only death” in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. They add that both Quill and Gamora will leave the Guardians behind, with Rocket stepping into the leadership position.
As this is completely unverified, the claim has to be taken with a pinch of salt. In saying that, there are some moments in the new Guardians Vol. 3 trailer that would support the theory. One in particular shows a grievously-wounded Drax, being aided by Gamora and Mantis, after appearing to be shot in the chest.
This isn’t an entirely sad ending for Drax, though. In the first Guardians movie, he said that he would be reunited with his family when facing death. In that, fans can find some solace that while his dying would mean the end of his story on screen, the character would be with his loved ones again.
What we can predict with almost 100% certainty, however, is that The High Evolutionary isn’t going to survive. Villains in the MCU only really make it past a single movie when they are set up to be the “Big Bad” for the foreseeable future. That spot has already been filled by Jonathan Majors and his take on Kang the Conqueror, so expect this to be a one-and-done for Chukwudi Iwuji’s villain.
As for Adam Warlock? He’s probably making it out alive. While he is coming in as an adversary to the Guardians, it’s looking increasingly likely that he will turn against The High Evolutionary, and instead join with the team to take him down.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
