We all need to relax a little more and most of us are bad at it. Sometimes we need extra help to chill properly, so why not fire up a bong, take a long rip from the vape pen, or grab the strong edibles and play something that helps set the tone for a magical 420 experience? Let the day slip away and get absorbed into these best video games to play on 420.
Play These Video Games on 420
Below is a list of games we suggest to play while baked. Most of them are solid in any state, and many of the mechanics that make them fun while high are just smart design tenants in any situation, but we think these points play well with getting high and just zoning out for a great time. Pick your pleasure and maybe try these titles out during the next big trip.
Stardew Valley
Farming seems like a lot of tough work, but it’s easier when we can do it with a mouse or controller. This is a title about inheriting a farm and trying to make a life out of it, and that prospect of building and keeping it running over the seasons isn’t just comfortable—it feels productive. Stardew Valley is open-ended, the goals are set by the player, so it can last for a long while, and there are plenty of different activities to do, as well as the possibility for a little romance. There’s always work to be done on the farm. The daily cycle and grind help players zone out and sort their resources, feeling accomplished by growing something and watching the hours melt away with the sun.
Halo
Many people like to avoid overly competitive games when they’re blazing, but others find that being stoned takes some of the edge off and a simple squeeze of the trigger brings catharsis. It’s easy to become focused, drown out the rest of the world, and simply make all of the little red dots on the radar disappear; the higher the killstreak, the greater the feeling, with the announcer’s voice urging continued destruction. It doesn’t have to be surgical, there’s little brainpower required, just reaction and determination. The drugs also help the deaths wash over more easily. Maybe Halo isn’t everyone’s bag, but Overwatch and Fortnite have comparable strengths when it comes to video games to play on 420.
Minecraft
Some people need tasks when they’re under the influence, but not something too restrictive. Minecraft allows for that level of creativity and a fantasy-type world with monsters (that can be turned off). Craft weapons, build hovels, construct mansions, or raise empires, and that’s assuming players don’t feel the call of adventure and survival. There are plenty of dungeons to pillage and many secret biomes to ravage. Personally, I spend my time in creative mode and get lost in building gorgeous cathedrals or hidden fortresses no one else ever sees. This is a game that embraces the urge to create and helps spawn ridiculous ideas as well as delusions of grandeur at 5 in the morning. Various settings are available to give all participants the type of experience they want and the music helps keep things chill, even if attacked, just don’t forget to save.
Fallout 1
Don’t be afraid of the world ending, there’s still plenty to do in post-apocalyptic California. Go on a journey to save Vault 13 in this turn-based RPG. Sure, there is a little math involved, with stats, action-points, and percentages, but for those looking to dive deep into a system, do a little inventory management, and learn the mechanics, an altered state might help plot out all those methodical moves. Moreover, it’s about the mood, as Fallout provides a haunting atmosphere and muted color palette to help absorb players into the world. The music offers a huge assist with this, as many of the tracks have long, deep, and somber stretches as tones linger over the wasteland, reminding everyone that there is very little hope other than what we make ourselves.
Far Cry 3
Maybe a little shooting without that competitive drive is on the menu, or at least not against other people. Far Cry 3 strands the player on a tropical island with an endless supply of bullets and bad guys to shoot, animals to hunt, as well as towers to climb. Sometimes I like to just get into a jeep take a casual drive on the dirt roads, or chase down enemy soldiers. Sure, the missions are there, but this environment encourages exploration, random battles, and even has the main character, Jason Brody, using natural herbs to heal. There are a few trippier moments in the story and one particular mission, “Kick the Hornet’s Nest,” involves a flame thrower, a ton of weed, and blasting “Make It Bun Dem,” by Skrillex and Damian Marley. Everything comes together excellently in that part and doing it while high is icing on a violent cake. If that sounds too heavy, maybe give No Man’s Sky a shot for something with the same qualities but lighter.
