The Sins of Thomas Wayne
It is beginning to seem that Riddler’s entire revenge plot, and the plot of the movie, seem to be focused on the Wayne family. Not only does Riddler seemingly know Batman’s identity but numerous leaks and hints in the trailers suggest that some prior transgression of his father Thomas Wayne is the root cause. “The sins of the father” is clearly scrawled on the floor in Riddler’s lair, and the latest trailer features Bruce confronting Alfred about some major lie from his past — all of which seems to echo Batman: The Telltale Series, where Thomas Wayne committed rivals to Arkham Asylum.
Batman, Catwoman, and Riddler were friends
A recent synopsis for the movie didn’t reveal much about the plot apart from the crucial detail that Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle/Catwoman were childhood friends. Beyond that, a Japanese trailer features a shot that suggests that Edward Nashton/The Riddler also knew Bruce Wayne when they were kids.
Zero Year
It’s been strongly rumored and semi-confirmed by scenes in the most recent trailer that part of The Riddler’s plan is to set off bombs and flood Gotham City. This brings to mind the comics story Zero Year by Court of Owls creator Scott Snyder, where The Riddler does exactly that and ushers in an apocalyptic Gotham with himself in total control.
HBO Max spin-offs
At the moment there are at least three The Batman spin-offs rumored or in various stages of production. Gotham PD was announced first, under showrunner Joe Barton, but has yet to reveal any specific details. Another series based around Colin Farrell’s The Penguin has been all but confirmed, and a further spin-off for Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman has been rumored the longest.
The Joker and the Mad Hatter
Two villains that have been strongly rumored as making appearances are Jervis Tetch/The Mad Hatter and The Joker. While Mad Hatter is suspected to just be a drug dealer, The Joker could be being set up for a role in The Batman 2, played by Eternals actor Barry Keoghan. It’s likely that neither will have more than a cameo role in The Batman, however.
The Batman opens in the US on March 4 and will appear on HBO Max 45 days later.
