The season finale of Star Wars: The Bad Batch is finally here, wrapping up the first instalment of adventures in a post-Clone Wars era. The animated series has explored a new period in the Star Wars saga that we haven’t seen before, where the Empire is building from the ground up to rule the galaxy. The last episode ended on a cliffhanger, as the Clone homeworld Kamino was torn apart by Star Destroyers, with the Bad Batch stranded on their planet of origin. The Bad Batch Episode 17 review and recap
The Bad Batch Episode 16 isn’t the best instalment of the show we’ve had. However, it does wrap up the action in a reasonably satisfying way. We get to see how the Batch survives their turmoil on Kamino, as well as what will happen going forward with Crosshair and the Empire.
Trapped on a Kaminoan structure that’s rapidly sinking into the water, the Batch scamper throughout their ravaged homeworld as they try to get back to the surface. There’s an uneasy alliance between our heroes and Crosshair – who tried to kill them all last episode. They do manage to escape using floating pods, but Crosshair refuses to join up with them. and at the end, we see the Empire preparing Kaminoan scientist Nala Se to help work on new Imperial research.
While it’s not the most exciting or impactful episode of The Bad Batch so far, the finale does a good enough job of tying up any plot threads. We get to see how they survive, though there’s too much focus on action rather than plot here. In fact, the first 15 minutes or so is almost entirely action, showing the Batch’s efforts to get back above the water.
This doesn’t leave much room for character development and resolution at the end. What we get is enjoyable; mainly Crosshair still resolving to work with the Empire. It means he’ll likely return as an adversary in season 2. However, we don’t get to see where the Batch finds themselves after their adventures on Kamino. This leaves viewers slightly out of the loop as the season ends.
Therefore, the episode feels more like a mid-season adventure than the all-out finale. You might leave this one feeling slightly dissatisfied at the plot resolution, as it all wraps up quite quickly. However, the final scene teases new Imperial developments to come — something the Batch will surely face in season 2.
