Tell GR | Should more politicians like AOC play video games to encourage voting?

AOC debuted her Twitch channel this week, playing Among Us with fellow US congresswoman Ilhan Omar and a bunch of streamers including Hasan Abi, Pokimane, and Moist Critical. The livestream was watched by over 400,000 people, which begs the question — should more politicians be following in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s footsteps?

The US Presidential election date is nearing, with November 3 being the date on which it will be decided if Donald Trump or Joe Biden will lead the country for the next four years. In an effort to encourage a new audience to get out, AOC set up a Twitch channel and recruited a bunch of popular streamers to join here as she played Among Us.

The results were overwhelmingly positive, with AOC enjoying one of the most-viewed streams in the platform’s history, just behind Ninja and Drake’s surprising Fortnite collaboration. However, it’s also arguably something that only someone like AOC could have pulled off, given her knowledge of gaming and her prior experience with Twitch.

So would it be a good idea for more politicians to use video games and Twitch to reach out to their audience? We’ve already seen Joe Biden’s camp using Animal Crossing: New Horizons to reach out to younger audiences, but is this something that should be adopted more readily in an increasingly online world?

Let us know in the comments section below, and we’ll feature the best response in next week’s Tell GR.
