Torchlight 2 is one of the best action RPGs in recent memory. You now have the chance to get Torchlight 2 free on the Epic Games Store, and it’s not an opportunity to be missed — this game makes for a delightful throwback to an era when ARPGs weren’t riddled with microtransactions.
Many years ago, I somehow found myself with access to the Torchlight 2 Alpha. I spent a fair amount of time in the first Torchlight, and I wasn’t too keen on the changes made in the sequel. I wasn’t alone it seems, and the developers listened — the Torchlight 2 you see today is very different from what I saw in the Alpha test.
The same philosophy of listening to the community has followed through even today. Torchlight Frontiers was supposed to be a free-to-play game, but the feedback from testers led Echtra Games to scrap its free-to-play plans and make Torchlight 3 a standalone, single-purchase title. That willingness to listen to the fans is one of many reasons why you should get Torchlight 2 free when you can.
Torchlight 2 is old, but it’s well-designed
The Torchlight franchise was designed by many people who worked on the original Diablo games and were serious fans of the franchise’s early days. Diablo 2 remains one of the finest ARPGs ever made, and that legacy is honored in Torchlight.
Note, for example, the use of pets. There’s no need to run into town to sell stuff; you can simply send your pet along and they’ll take care of it for you, allowing you to stay into the dungeon. (Your pet, of course, also helps you out in battle.)
There’s no silliness with matchmaking or being unable to connect to servers, either. You can play online, you can play through a LAN connection, and you can play single-player without an Internet connection at all.
Best of all — there are no microtransactions. You buy the game and you have access to everything in the game, as long as you can earn it by slaying monsters and beating the challenges placed in front of you. Your credit card has no power here — you have to earn your loot, and that’s something that’s sorely missing in a lot of modern games.
Getting Torchlight 2 free is an absolute steal
I put a few dozen hours into Torchlight 2, and the only reason I didn’t spend more time in the game was because I was really burned out on ARPGs at the time. Getting Torchlight 2 free is a fantastic deal and it’s well worth picking it up.
