Tell GR: Who Is Your Main in Smash Ultimate, and Why?

Yesterday’s Tell GR had us naming the most overrated games of 2018. It was a challenging task, as this year has been overflowing with fantastic titles. One of these standout games is Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which recently launched on the Nintendo Switch. Well, most of GR’s editorial team has been playing the game, and we each have our own unique characters who we love to main. With over 70 different fighters to choose from, all with their own strengths and weaknesses, there’s no doubt going to some differing opinions.

Tell us who you main, and also why you main them, in the comments below and we’ll feature our favorite responses in tomorrow’s Tell GR.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: KING K ROOL.

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: My main is Marth because he’s an absolute powerhouse. He’s quick on his feet, and just has so much raw power that some characters have no chance against him. His reversal can change the course of a fight instantly as you turn a foe’s attack against them, and his ability to instantly break shields allows you to continuously take advantage of his offensive power. His one drawback is that he’s a bit slow to attack, and against a quick enemy you have to practice patience before striking, but that makes a victory all the more satisfying in my opinion.

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: I’ll never abandon Luigi as my main. While there are now a huge number of interesting characters that are fun to play as, I always return to the taller brother for his consistency. He feels perfectly weighted and I enjoy all of his moves, including the bit-of-a-gamble Green Missile.

Bradley Russell, news editor: I’ve not actually unlocked many of the (roughly) 7 billion characters in the game, but I’m weirdly really enjoying Kirby at the moment. Finding out what moves the pink puffball can mimic by swallowing fighters never gets old and his B + direction hammer attack is so damn satisfying. Plus, for online, you can’t beat his frenzied floating. It’s part trolling, part terrifying for my foes. Perfect.

Michael Leri, features editor: I dabbled with as many characters as I could but I usually came back to Nathan Drake. His moveset covers medium and short range pretty well and was also pretty authentically replicated from his solo games. Learning him had a relatively higher skill ceiling, which made him more satisfying to play than some of other characters on the roster. I can’t wait to see how he changes in the sequel.

Question: What is the Most Overrated Game of 2018?

DJJ66: “Spiderman for the PS4, definitely. Yeah, it’s a good game, but it’s by no means as earth shattering as people made it out to be. Granted I didn’t play much of it, but what I did play really left me disappointed. I was expecting something along the lines of Spiderman 2 on the PS2, which it came close but didn’t really quite get there.”
