Tell GR: What Did You Think of the Detective Pikachu Trailer?

The first Detective Pikachu trailer has been released, and I don’t think anyone was quite expecting it. We’d heard that Ryan Reynolds would voice the little yellow rodent and it’d be a live-action film, but the debut trailer introduced us to a world of uncomfortable furry Pokemon and a legitimately terrifying Psyduck.

The GameRevolution editorial team has shared their thoughts on the matter, and you can share your own opinions in the comments section below. As always, we’ll feature our favorite.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “This is a film that knows its target audience: disappointed millennials who grew up to be admin assistants, not Pokemon trainers. It looks utterly ridiculous and I think I love it.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I liked the world-building I saw in the trailer and I’m glad that it’s set in the Pokemon world as opposed to some random Pikachu in ours. I’d have rather seen this sort of production value go into a live-action Pokemon movie about Pokemon training instead, but I’m willing to give Detective Pikachu a shot.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I thought it was awesome and I’m super hyped to see this new take on the Pokemon universe. The style is refreshingly different, as is the Sinnoh setting. Ryan Reynolds is a cool dude, so I’m all aboard him being inside a giant yellow mouse.”

Bradley Russell, sub-editor: “It’s about as impressive as a live-action movie starring a sentient Pikachu not voiced by Danny DeVito can be. I’m eager to see more of the outside world and mix of humans living alongside Pokemon, but I’m not holding my breath. Still, it has me sold on a Pokemon movie for the first time in years. I’ll see it out of morbid curiosity if nothing else.

Michael Leri, sub-editor: Detective Pikachu looks like a bizarre joke tweet that accidentally made its way to a Warner Bros. executive’s desk… and actually got greenlit. But I like how weird this Pokemon adaptation seems to be. It might not turn out well but I already am applauding its approach.”

Kevin Tucker, guides editor: “While I’m all for a fresh live-action Pokemon movie, I can’t be the only one who is just completely put off by Ryan Reynolds voicing Pikachu in the Detective Pikachu trailer. It’s not that I think he’s a bad actor — far from it, really — it’s just that his voice is distinct and instantly recognizable. Suspension of disbelief or not, it’s going to be hard to hear that voice and think, “This is Pikachu I’m hearing speak”.”

Question: Are You Excited For Fallout 76?

Starling: “No, because it doesn’t seem any interesting to play alone. I do have friends to play it with but they aren’t really interested in it and since we are all adults we have hard time finding matching free time in any case.”
