Tell GR: What Were Your Thoughts on Blizzcon 2018?

Blizzcon 2018 is over, with Blizzard making a bunch of announcements regarding its popular line-up of games. We got a brand new Overwatch hero along with info pertaining to future characters, a new (and controversial) mobile Diablo game in the form of Diablo Immortal, and our first look at WoW Classic. However, some viewers and attendees were left disappointed by what was on show. But what was your take on the event?

The GameRevolution editorial team has shared their thoughts on the matter, and you can share your own opinions in the comments section below. As always, we’ll feature our favorite.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: I play a lot of Overwatch, so that was what I was most looking forward to. I mainly play healers and occasionally tank, so Ashe just looks like a character who’s going to annoy the shit out of me more than anything. Still, I’m sure she’ll be a lot of fun for those who don’t like helping their team.

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: I thought Overwatch was the big winner here. A new hero is always good news, and hyping Ashe with the short before the reveal was a great way to do it. I was excited about the WoW Classic news as well. I know a lot of people (including myself) are a bit intimidated by the fact the MMO has had 7 major expansions and want to start with the base game.

The biggest news somehow, though, was the absolutely terrible reaction to Diablo Immortal. I don’t care for how rude people were, but I can get the sentiment. Blizzard really should have done what Bethesda did with Blades here. An announcement of Diablo Immortal and then maybe a tiny teaser for Diablo 4 or whatever mainstream Diablo thing they’re working on would have gone a long way towards people softening to the idea of a Diablo mobile title.

This really isn’t the kind of announcement I would have even made at Blizzcon, since it’s an assembly of people who are rabid Blizzard game fans who paid $200 just to be there. Blizzcon attendees don’t really seem like the target audience for Diablo Immortal, and the announcement took this from a ho-hum Blizzcon to a major disappointment for those expecting something substantial from the Diablo series.

Michael Leri, sub-editor: This was a weaker Blizzcon but it was fine. I’m only actively into Overwatch (_and I’m really into Overwatch_) and the new hero and short were great to see. Ashe is a cowgirl with a comedic relief robot butler and that’s exactly what I didn’t know I wanted.

Kevin Tucker, guides editor: Blizzcon 2018 had smaller reveals for just about every game that studio fans expected to see — save for Diablo 4, but we already knew that wasn’t happening. Unfortunately, it ended on a major fizzle with the announcement of Diablo Immortal, and there’s little doubt that’s all fans will remember from the convention.

Bradley Russell, sub-editor: I’m one of those people who has no stock or particular interest in any of Blizzard’s titles, but it was bizarre to me to see the outcry towards a Diablo title that’s designed to get people like me into the series. Surely that can only be a good thing? Diablo 4 is still on the way, folks, even if they botched the absolutely best time to announce it
