Disney Fox Kingdom Hearts 3

What Disney Buying 21st Century Fox Means for Video Games

Disney has made a monumental move purchasing 21st Century Fox today. The $52.4 billion deal includes every major cable entertainment program, all of Fox’s film and television studios, and all of the major properties that Fox has rights to like X-Men and Fantastic Four.

While this immediately has everyone going crazy about the potential of the X-Men uniting with the Avengers again, there are benefits for video games, too. Namely, all of the endless possibilities for crossovers from Disney-owned game franchises and Fox ones. With that said, let’s go over the biggest potential benefits of Disney buying Fox.

X-Men Can Be in Every Marvel Game Now

Take a look at the roster of the recently released Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 that came out just last month for every major console and PC. Though it boasts an extensive set of playable heroes, you’ll notice that neither the X-Men nor Fantastic Four are included at all. This is most likely due to the hurdles a team has to go through to make that happen.

Some games in the past have been able to feature X-Men (take a look at the recently shutdown Marvel Heroes Omega, RIP), but those are far and few between. With this deal with Fox, developers like the Lego team can incorporate beloved characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, and Deadpool with ease.

A Great Alien Game Can Finally Happen

Alien Isolation

Among the list of numerous properties that Disney now owns from Fox, there is the classic horror franchise Alien. It’s been a good while since we’ve gotten a universally acclaimed game based on the Alien series, but that could change now. The films are still going strong, so Disney has the chance to bank on that with some quality video game tie-ins.

Were Visceral still around, I would’ve said give it to them considering EA and Disney’s current relationship regarding Star Wars. However, there are plenty of other studios that would probably jump on a chance to work with the house of Mickey on an Alien game. This gives me hope that someday we can see a truly great horror game set there.

New Potential Worlds for Kingdom Hearts Including Avatar

Avatar Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to come out sometime next year, so I’m not holding my breath for any major additions in that game unless we all want another huge delay. However, Disney buying Fox does open up a lot of possibilities for the Kingdom Hearts series moving forward, whether it’s a numbered sequel or one of the many spin-offs.

Specifically, I’d like to see Sora and the gang leap into James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. Working much like The Nightmare Before Christmas, it could transform the characters into Na’vi versions of themselves, blue alien and all. The world of Avatar is gorgeous, so it would make for a really unique level in Kingdom Hearts. Plus, there are several Avatar sequels on the way so there is plenty of time for a tie-in.

These are just some of the potential benefits for video games from Disney buying Fox. Let us know in the comments some of the crazy crossovers or games you’d like to see happen.
