Best of 2015 Awards: Nick’s Editor’s Choice

Winner: Fallout 4

If you told me a month before Fallout 4 released that it would be in the bridesmaid position throughout the Best of 2015 awards, I wouldn’t have believed you. But that’s where Fallout 4 finds itself, despite being a vast improvement over its predecessors in gunplay, graphics, sound, and overall presentation. The Bostonian Commonwealth is a visual feast and incredibly vast—rolling terrain, skyscrapers, boardwalk waterfronts, and scarred, irradiated wasteland.

The reimagined Power Armor as the intimidating suit of steel that we imagined it would have been is fantastic, along with the new crafting and settlement system. The story and dialogue lacked a bit of depth and nuance compared to New Vegas, but at least we had voiced dialogue for the protagonist and memorable characters like Nick Valentine. If anything, Fallout 4 serves as a solid foundation for future Fallout titles to build upon (perhaps Bethesda should give Obsidian Entertainment another ring, yes?).
