Best of 2015 Awards: Jonathan’s Editor’s Choice

Winner: Kerbal Space Program

At one time or another everyone has heard the phrase "it isn't rocket science," referring to how simple something is in comparison to what is considered highly complex subject matter. While many echo these words, few truly understand how extraordinary challenging rocket science really is.

Kerbal Space Program makes rocket science and spaceflight accessible in a well-constructed package. Playing it, I've been able to extend my boundless affinity for astronomy and spacefaring far beyond reading Wikipedia pages and watching livestreams of rocket launches. I've become acquainted with the challenges of balancing atmospheric friction, center of mass, and orbital trajectory using staged spacecraft. Something that seems as simple as reaching sub-orbital altitude before landing a manned pod back on earth is as much as challenge in real life and Kerbal Space Program as it is rewarding. Although this one task requires multiple hours of training and earned expertise, the journey doesn't end there. Beyond the gravitational pull of Kerbin (Earth) are many celestial bodies waiting to be explored. As I hone in on my rocket engineering and pilot skills, I become closer to reaching these monumental milestones that await.

At just $40, Kerbal Space Program is a game well on its way to offering over 100 hours of compelling gameplay that has not only entertained me, but expanded my knowledge in the real world. For that, it is my favorite game of 2015 and one that holds great importance to me.
