Shigeru Miyamoto Suggests Casual Gamers “Challenge” Themselves

Shigeru Miyamoto has created some of the most iconic video game characters of all time and they're all best friends too, riding around in go-karts and playing sports together, though I'm still surprised to hear his comments on gamers residing outside of the console and PC markets.

According to NeoGAF user Nibel, the next issue of EDGE Magazine features an interview with the man behind Mario, Peach, and most of Nintendo's long-lasting household names who says that many casual gamers might have more fun at Disneyland.

Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games].

The magazine says that the company has typically veered away from making comments about markets they don't compete in and Miyamoto's words seem to suggest a lot about how the company views its own products. He continued:

In the days of DS and Wii, Nintendo tried its best to expand the gaming population. Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It's a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people's daily lives.

The October 2014 issue of EDGE Magazine will have the full interview with Miyamoto in addition to more on Nintendo's future with the Wii U console.
