While Nintendo has yet to fully embrace the cross-buy model, we're seeing baby steps in that direction with an indie game called Squids Odyssey.
The game launches on both the 3DS and Wii U eShop this week, and if you purchase it for one platform, you'll get access to it on the other—that is, of course, if you have your Nintendo Network ID set up on both devices. Oh yeah, and it only applies to those is Europe… for now.
"We are very excited by this promotion as it's the first time this happens – as far as I know,” Emeric Thoa, The Game Bakers creative content lead, said in a statement to GoNintendo. “It's a proof that Nintendo is making efforts in giving more control to the developer on its pricing and promotions.
"I'm glad that our players will be able to play on 3DS and Wii U for the price of one game. It's a shame that it's only in Europe yet but hopefully this cross buy operation will be appreciated and the technical constraints that prevented it to happen in the US will be fixed."
Here's to hoping this is just the beginning of a bigger push to unify the 3DS and Wii U ecosystems with many more cross-buy titles in the future. Sure, this may just be a baby step forward, but I'll take baby steps from Nintendo over no steps at all.
