Early Wii U Sales in Japan Outpace That of PlayStation 4

Believe it or not, Wii U is actually outpacing PlayStation 4 when it comes to early hardware sales in Japan.

When examining the sales data from Media Create, IGN notes that after three weeks in, Nintendo's tablet-centric console managed to sell 557,901 units in the region. Comparatively, in the same three-week timespan following PlayStation 4's launch in February, Sony has sold just 410,083 consoles. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to then realize that Wii U actually performed better during its first few weeks in Japan than PlayStation 4.

So what does this mean? Are Japanese gamers simply not interested in what Sony is offering with PlayStation 4? Is there just not enough software yet available that appeals to that particular demographic? Perhaps the upcoming launch of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will stir up a bit more excitement in the region.
