From the outset, it’s been clear that the Sonic Frontiers Chaos Emeralds are precious items that the blue hedgehog will be searching for in the upcoming open-world adventure releasing on November 8. Now, Sega has revealed a new overview trailer that explains exactly how Chaos Emeralds are incorporated into the game, and fans are already reacting positively to the fact that these gems have made a triumphant return to Sonic’s story.
Getting Chaos Emeralds in Sonic Frontiers will take a lot of work
The trailer (posted above) reveals that gathering Chaos Emeralds is no longer optional, as they are in the classic Sonic games, but are necessary “to progress further in the game.” Unlocking Chaos Emerald vaults is easier said than done, though, as you’ll first need to defeat bosses spread throughout Starfall Islands to earn Portal Gears. Grabbing enough of these will allow Sonic to open Cyber Space portals, and completing challenges in these Cyber Spaces will give you Vault Keys that are used to claim Chaos Emeralds. Whew, did you get all that?
Luckily, you won’t have to destroy bosses in any strict order, with the trailer revealing that the open world will give you “the freedom to play the game in the order that best matches your playstyle.” It will be interesting to see to what extent this is true given that Chaos Emeralds are required to progress, which usually entails some areas being locked away but that might not be the case here.
To make Sonic Frontiers easier for players not accustomed or skilled with the game’s new 3D combat system, the trailer also shows that you can toggle on Auto Combos. This will allow you to perform attack combos with the press of a single button instead of having to learn a complicated string of moves. It will be curious to see what options might be disabled if you turn this on, but at least there’s an option for players of all skill levels.
In other news, Assassin’s Creed Mirage has been finally announced and will appear in Ubisoft Forward later this month, and the LOTR: Rings of Power budget reveals it’s the most expensive TV show ever.
