2K Sports Cancels MLB 2K Series

In a statement to Joystiq, 2K Sports has officially "decided not to renew" its MLB 2K baseball game series: "We are very proud of the achievements made by the MLB 2K team and look forward to their contributions to our future titles, including NBA 2K – our industry's #1 rated and #1 selling basketball franchise."

Baseball fans may have seen this coming, either because they noticed that 2K Sports had been taking down all evidence of MLB from its Facebook, YouTube, and official websites or because the MLB 2K series hasn't been faring well in scores. MLB 2K13 has a Metascore of 48, 20 points lower than MLB 2K12's Metascore of 68.

Without this series for competition, this means that Microsoft's consoles will be without a simulation baseball video game (despite its emphasis on sports in their press conferences), while Sony's consoles will continue to have MLB: The Show, scheduled this year on PS3, PS4, and Vita for spring. Sony would do well to capitalize on this MLB exclusivity for as long as it lasts.
