Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II may well be getting all of the headlines at the moment, but Call of Duty: Warzone 2 was also officially unveiled and will be coming to PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One later in 2022. Those concerned about their progress in Call of Duty: Warzone need not worry as there are no plans to close Warzone down at the moment.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2 will be released this year
There is no Call of Duty: Warzone 2 release date at the moment, although Infinity Ward and Activision have said it will be released in 2022 sometime after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 hits PC and consoles on October 28. Warzone 2.0 will be a free-to-play battle royale that is “an extension of the Modern Warfare II universe” and will include new MW2 content and systems. Built on the same IW 8.0 engine that is used by 2019’s Modern Warfare, Warzone, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2, the developer is aiming to provide “the most seamless and advanced Call of Duty experiences ever”.
Players will have completely new progression and inventories separate from the existing COD Warzone, which will continue onwards beyond the release of Warzone 2.0. In fact, Warzone 2.0 will be a completely separate experience altogether with “new technology, new features, and new gameplay”. This will include a new sandbox mode and a “brand-new playspace”. To deter cheaters, RICOCHET Anti-Cheat will be included in the game from day one. More details on the future of the two games will be revealed soon.
Whereas Warzone development was led primarily by Raven Software, Warzone 2.0 is in the charge of Infinity Ward with Raven taking on the role of a support studio. There is also an all-new Call of Duty: Warzone mobile experience in development, although it wasn’t revealed who will be the developer behind that one.
In other news, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders are available now. Elsewhere, a Nintendo Direct is rumored to be happening on June 15.
