Bandai Namco has announced the One Piece Odyssey release date period in an announcement trailer for the game. While there isn’t any combat in the trailer, it is being described as a “JRPG” and there are plenty of hints in the video that point to One Piece Odyssey as the “One Piece Dragon Quest” that fans have been wanting for the popular anime series for a very long time.
What is the One Piece Odyssey release date and release platforms?
According to the official blurb of the announcement trailer, One Piece Odyssey will be arriving sometime this year in 2022 and is slated for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. The paired description is somewhat vague: “A storm, a shipwreck, a mysterious island. Expect the unexpected on your next adventure with the Straw Hats.”
The official press release and producer interview show much more information, revealing that the story, characters, and monsters were created by Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece. They have even gotten the composer of Dark Souls and the “Tales of” series, Motoi Sakuraba, for One Piece Odyssey as well.
The story will begin with the Straw Hats being shipwrecked on an island after being swallowed by a huge storm. Monkey D. Luffy will need to find all of his shipmates as he explores the mysterious island “on a new adventurous journey filled with wonders of a raging nature, powerful enemies, and strange encounters with island locals.”
It seems that Bandai Namco has been waiting and working patiently for several years before announcing One Piece Odyssey in preparation for One Piece’s 25th anniversary. The last several One Piece video game adaptations have been ho-hum, particularly the rather mediocre action-adventure One Piece World Seeker from 2019. This JRPG concept fits the One Piece series far better.
