Guardians of the Galaxy comic canceled by Marvel

The current run of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic has been canceled by Marvel a month before the release of the popular team’s first big action-adventure from Square Enix and Eidos Montreal, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, to say nothing of the movie and Disney Plus holiday special from GOTG 1 and 2 and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy issue 18 is the last, but why is Marvel doing this at this time?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy comic canceled, but why?

Guardians of the Galaxy comic canceled

At this moment in time, Marvel has offered no explanation for the abrupt cancelation of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series by Al Ewing and Juann Frigeri. The series ended with issue #18 on September 22, with the story arc ‘The Last Annihilation’ slowing down and coming to a conclusion with the words “The End! Thanks for everything – and see you at Gosnell’s!” Gosnells being the main bar the Guardians frequented during the run.

What’s causing the most distress among fans about this comic’s cancelation is the praise the writers received for strongly embracing LGBT storylines throughout the run, such as Star-Lord/Peter Quill coming out as bisexual and having a love affair with Nova/Richard Rider. Beloved side-characters Moondragon and Genis-Vell were married, and Hercules and Marvel Boy also started a relationship.

Regardless, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 on the way for a 2023 release, it’s been pretty much confirmed that the comics series will return in 2022. However, it seems likely that Al Ewing and Juann Frigeri will not be handling it.

The better news is that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game from Square Enix is out on October 26. going to exceed expectations and our previewer expects that it’s “going to exceed expectations.” It’s even got Rick Astley on the playlist, so Eidos Montreal clearly have good taste when it comes to music, or memes.
