If you’re a Hulu subscriber, we’ve got some bad news. The subscription service is set to increase its monthly fees this October, with each plan increasing its price by a dollar. The changes are due to come into effect next month, so make the most of your last month of Hulu before the prices rise once more. Though it’s a relatively small change, it’s still worth asking one big question: Why is the Hulu price going up?
Why is the Hulu monthly subscription fee going up in October 2021?
While Hulu haven’t given a precise statement on the reasons behind the fee increase, all signs are pointing towards the service’s relationship with Disney Plus. As Hulu are owned by Disney, the increase in individual subscriptions could gear consumers towards purchasing the combined bundle of both services.
It seems very likely since Disney Plus also increased its monthly subscription fees earlier this year. In May, a month of Disney Plus went up by a dollar to $7.99. Today’s Hulu news seems to be following this trend. A month of ad-supported Hulu will now cost $6.99, with the ad-free version setting you back $12.99.
Interestingly, though, the price of the combined Disney-Hulu-ESPN bundle hasn’t changed. That costs $13.99 for an ad-supported combination of the three services or $19.99 without ads. Considering those prices aren’t changing, it certainly seems like Disney wants audiences to pick that option, which is cheaper on balance than subscribing to the services individually.
Of course, Hulu hasn’t come out and said this – but the lack of increase for the bundle is certainly important. It did increase in price back in May alongside Disney Plus. Now it’s staying the same as Hulu goes up, which is sure to guide audiences in the bundle’s direction. It’s a clever marketing ploy to boost combined sales – especially if you plan to use all three services.
