Dune is considered a timeless film among sci-fi fans, but its latest silver screen version isn’t quite ready to launch. Despite previous word that the movie would be ready on October 1, Warner Bros. has now delayed director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune release date by three weeks.
Thankfully, the feature’s delay doesn’t come down to any sort of production issues. Instead, the move was a simple reshuffle of Warner’s late-year schedule. According to Variety, the October 1 position formerly held by the previous Dune release date is now being filled by The Many Saints of Newark, the upcoming prequel movie based on The Sopranos television series.
All considered, this final three-week delay means Denis Villeneuve’s Dune film has ultimately been pushed back by almost a year. The biggest delay, naturally, was caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which threw a wrench into countless development plans throughout 2020.
Still, the wait is nearly over. The latest Dune film, based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, is just four months away from launch. Beyond from its Oscar-nominated director, the film stars a number well-known actors: Zendaya, who made unfortunate headlines for her role in Space Jam: A New Legacy, will be playing Chani. Josh Brolin and Dave Bautista, who appear in both games and movies as Thanos and Drax the Destroyer, respectively, will play Beast and Gurney. Finally, protagonist Paul will be played by Timothée Chalamet, known for his role in The King as well as his Oscar-nominated performance in Call Me by Your Name.
Don’t fret: The new Dune movie has only been delayed by three weeks. Instead of seeing it on October 1, you’ll now have to wait until October 21, 2020. Even better, you won’t have to brave the sun or the crowds to see it in theaters: Dune 2021 will be available to stream on HBO Max for 31 days.
