A Quiet Place 3 could well happen, even though A Quiet Place 2 has just reached theaters following a hefty pandemic-related delay. Director John Krasinski’s unexpected follow-up to his popular 2018 film has broken the unwritten rule that horror sequels are always terrible, proving to be both a commercial and critical hit after debuting at number one in the US box office.
This is all despite Krasinski not wanting to direct a sequel at all, after telling CinemaBlend that he was afraid of following up the original as he didn’t want it to become “some big regurgitated thing.” While this could be taken as an indication that his latest movie will definitely be the last in the series, there is absolutely room for The Office alumni to create the A Quite Place trilogy. Here’s why that could happen.
Warning: Major spoilers for A Quiet Place 2 follow.
Will there be A Quiet Place 3?
A Quiet Place 3 is most certainly on the cards considering the conclusion of Krasinski’s latest film, which leaves a number of loose ends unsolved and even a glimmer of hope that all is not lost for humanity.
The series’ protagonist Emily Blunt (and wife to Krasinski) explained how her director husband already has plenty of plans for the future of A Quiet Place, indicating that this could easily transform into a trilogy following the events of this film.
Speaking to Collider, Blunt said: “[Krasinski] has a whole arc of ideas that could work. I think he just wanted to see how people responded to this one before he fully engaged his brain on the third one. But he has a couple of great ideas.”
Additionally, Krasinski himself told The Hollywood Reporter that he planted “easter eggs” within A Quiet Place 2 in case a third one is ever created, something which eagle-eyed viewers will need to keep in mind if the unconfirmed third movie ever comes to fruition. However, in that same interview, Krasinski also acknowledged that the box office potential of the world he’s helped create means that he “won’t be the guy or girl who does the last one or the last two.” This doesn’t appear to indicate that he’s looking to drop the director mantle for the series just yet, though does indicate that even a third movie might be not be the end.
So given that the sequel certainly sets the stage for a threequel, and both Blunt and Krasinski’s comments indicate that he’s keen to return to this world, how does A Quiet Place 2’s ending set up the sequel?
A Quiet Place 2 ending explained and how it sets up a sequel
A Quiet Place 2 concludes with Evelyn (Blunt) and Marcus (Noah Jupe) separated from Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Emmett (Cillian Murphy), after the latter duo travel out to an island containing a peaceful community of survivors.
In the film’s climax, one of the monsters makes its way to the island alongside Regan and Emmett, despite it being discovered that they cannot swim. The monster wreaks havoc on the island’s small community before Regan uses her now-fixed hearing aid to kill it while sending its noise across a radio signal. Back in the bunker where Evelyn and Marcus are hiding, Marcus uses the radio to kill another monster that was hunting down him and his mother, with Evelyn and the now-deceased Lee’s (Krasinski) kids coming to the rescue of the adults.
While it’s a relatively happy ending (save for the continued downfall of human civilization and all), it still does leave a few unanswered questions. For one, Evelyn is still separated from her daughter, who also now has the power to take down the monsters and pull humanity back from the brink. Additionally, the revelation that the monsters cannot swim potentially opens up the scale of what the audience was previously led to believe was the apocalypse. Did the meteors that brought the monsters to Earth really crash down on every country? Or is there a chance that there’s still a world out there that, for whatever reason, isn’t coming to the aid of the survivors?
Then there are the smaller plot threads such as the first introduction of other humans such as the world-weary Emmett, the band of survivors who “aren’t worth saving” who try to kidnap Regan, and the once-peaceful community now left without its leader after Djimon Hounsou’s unnamed character is killed in the last act. Will we see more of how humanity has reacted to this apocalypse? And how will the island community react to Emmett and Regan bringing a monster with them? These answers are ripe to be addressed in the sequel.
While A Quiet Place 3 may be currently unconfirmed, there’s plenty of fertile ground for director Krasinski to explore, and plenty more twists and turns to take its cast of characters down. With the dust having yet to settle on A Quiet Place 2, we’ll have to wait and see if we’ll be taken back to this terrifying world in the future.
In other news, Jurassic World fans are optimistic that a brand new video game based on the dinosaur film franchise is set to be announced. Battlefield 6’s release date has also been teased ahead of its reveal event.
