God of War Ragnarok, the sequel to Santa Monica Studio’s 2018 blockbuster, was meant to be one of the biggest releases of this year. Unfortunately, it seems Kratos isn’t quite ready to jump back into action. Citing its commitment to well-being and safety, Santa Monica has delayed the release date for God of War 2. Here’s everything we know about the GoW Ragnarok delay and when we can expect the sequel to finally launch.
How long has the God of War Ragnarok release date been delayed?
The new God of War 2 release date is set for 2022. Santa Monica Studio delayed the God of War Ragnarok release date to 2022 to ensure it could deliver a quality game without sacrificing the team’s safety or well-being.
This information was posted to the official Santa Monica Studio Twitter account. There, the developer provided specific reasoning as to why God of War Ragnarok has been delayed:
— Santa Monica Studio – God of War Ragnarök (@SonySantaMonica) June 2, 2021
Basically, Santa Monica wants to ensure it can keep making great games without pushing its team to the limit. This decision comes in a time when crunch culture is still a major concern even among AAA developers. Of course, that’s to say nothing of the lingering effects of the global pandemic or the rapid shift to telecommuting.
Unfortunately, Santa Monica didn’t give any indication of when the new God of War 2 release date may be. The original aim was a fourth-quarter 2021 release, which would have seen the game launch for the holiday season. It’s possible that this delay may only be a matter of months, pushing release out to the first or second quarter of 2022, but that’s simply speculation.
Either way, the God of War Ragnarok release date has been delayed to 2022. Like it or not, we’ll all have to wait just a bit longer to see what Santa Monica Studio has in store for Kratos’ next adventure. In the meantime, check out some of Ragnarok’s most interesting pre-launch rumors and theories.
