Far Cry 6 sequel

Far Cry 6 is not a sequel or prequel

Is Far Cry 6 a sequel? Is it connected to or continues the Far Cry 5 story or is set in the world of other Far Cry games, or is the new title a standalone experience? These are questions fans have had since the Far Cry 6 story was revealed last year, and have only been strengthened since the big gameplay reveal last week. Ubisoft has finally come out and clarified that Far Cry 6 is not a prequel or sequel and players don’t need to have played the other Far Cry games to understand the story.

Is Far Cry 6 a sequel or prequel to other Far Cry games?

Far Cry 6 sequel

In an Ask-Me-Anything thread on Reddit for Far Cry 6, Ubisoft developers answered numerous fan questions about the game, including one from user Cheesysock5 about whether the game is continuing the events of Far Cry 5 — which, fans may remember, ended in an apocalyptic nuclear war that led into the events of Far Cry: New Dawn. Narrative director Navid Khavari reassured them and other fans that Far Cry 6 is set in a different world from Far Cry 5, and that there are only “loose” connections between all the games in the Far Cry series.

“We tried to approach this with the idea that each Far Cry has its own stories and world,” Khavari explains. “While there are some loose connections between the games we wanted to focus on the story of Yara and its revolution, set in the present day, with Dani and Libertad fighting Anton’s regime.” In other words, players will not need to have played Far Cry 5 or any other Far Cry games to understand the story of Far Cry 6, and the events of each game are entirely separate from each other. So, no nuclear war then.

Far Cry 6 will be the first game in the series to offer male or female protagonist options, and two-player co-op is confirmed to be returning. However, gamers were quick to accuse the game of being visually downgraded during the recent gameplay reveal. Presumably more of Far Cry 6 will be shown off at E3 and Summer Game Fest later this month.
