It’s been three years since Bethesda confirmed the existence of its next big RPG but players are seemingly still no closer to knowing the Starfield release date. However, rumors began to circulate this week that a Starfield announcement may be closer than gamers think and that the game is “pretty much done.” Before hopeful fans could get too excited these rumors got shot down by several members of the gaming industry.
Why are there rumors of the Starfield release date being soon?
The rumors were started earlier this week by popular streamer Luke Stephens, who claimed that Starfield was “pretty much done” and that Bethesda wanted to “make up for Fallout 76” and deliver a game that’s “polished to perfection” — his quotes, which he didn’t give a source for. He claims that the game has been basically complete since September 2020 and Bethesda has been polishing it for release this year.
Apparently, Starfield has been “pretty much done” since September of last year. BGS has spent this year polishing it and refining the Next-Gen port. I’m told they’re trying to “make up for Fallout 76” and deliver a game that’s “polished to perfection.” Coming this year… Watch.

These claims have been subsequently shot down by several members of the gaming press, including GameInformer associate editor Liana Ruppert and Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
Once more with feeling: Starfield is not coming out this year, guys. That rumor is false.

However, while Schreier shoots down any notion that Starfield could come out anytime soon, he does confirm that Bethesda has plans to show it at the all-digital E3 next month, which was canceled last year thanks to the pandemic.
Rumors like this keep floating around but Starfield is nowhere near done, according to several ppl familiar with development. It'll be at E3 but the planned release date I've heard is way later than most people expect. Sharing this so that folks keep their expectations in check https://t.co/LVFzmX1XYu

It will be good to find out more about Starfield, as fans really don’t know much about the next game from Bethesda Game Studios right now, including whether or not it will have multiplayer. The same goes for the next game in the Elder Scrolls series, which was revealed at the same time as Starfield but is likewise still a long way from releasing. Just as a final confirmation then: Starfield is not coming out in 2021.
For anyone looking for a Fallout-style game in space, Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds just got a PS5/Xbox Series X upgrade. As for something to scratch that space itch in a Bethesda game, Fallout 76 is prepping for a big alien invasion sometime this year.
