UPDATE: Well, this is awkward. James Gunn retweeted our original story, noting that “just because I have characters in mind for Season 2 doesn’t mean either HBOMax or John & I have committed to it yet.” Our bad, this one’s on us.

ORIGINAL STORY: Director James Gunn has confirmed that he has plans in place for Peacemaker Season 2, despite the first season not being due for release until 2022. The latest DC movie The Suicide Squad isn’t out for a few months but an HBO Max spin-off series starring John Cena’s Peacemaker has been in the works for almost as long as the movie, and now it seems Warner Bros/HBO is confident enough in the success of Peacemaker that it already has a second season in development.
Is there a Peacemaker Season 2 release date?
Despite the fact that neither the first season nor the DCEU movie that it spun off from have released yet, Peacemaker Season 2 is already at the planning stage (meaning its release date is still a long way away), with director James Gunn deciding which new characters are going to be appearing in it. Gunn was answering questions about Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad on Twitter this week, where he confirmed that not only was Peacemaker Season 2 happening but that he had already held over a character from the first season.

Peacemaker Season 1 is down for a release on HBO Max in January 2022, five months after the release of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and beyond the cast list, not much is really known about the series, including whether or not it’s set before or after The Suicide Squad. It is known to feature two lesser-known DC heroes though: Vigilante (Chris Conrad) and Judomaster (Nhut Le).
After The Suicide Squad James Gunn will be splitting his time between Peacemaker and maybe some other DC properties, as well as returning to Marvel at last for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the GOTG Holiday Special.

As for Suicide Squad, the new movie launches July 30 in the UK and August 6 in the US in theaters and HBO Max. There’s also Rocksteady’s new game Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League too, which is currently planned for a 2022 release alongside the year’s other DC videogame Gotham Knights.
