Super Mario Party gets its first update in 2 years with online multiplayer

The new Super Mario Party update 2021 has dropped, the game’s first patch in over two years, which finally adds online multiplayer to the Nintendo Switch party game. The Super Mario Party 1.1.0 patch notes include its new online multiplayer component, a long-requested feature from fans of the game, implemented in a questionably late fashion.

Super Mario Party, the latest game in Nintendo’s long-running Mario Party series, came out all the way back in 2018 where it launched with no real online support. Three years after the Super Mario Party release date, and two years after the last official patch (a hotfix in March 2019), the new Super Mario Party 1.1.0 patch notes are here and the game is finally getting online multiplayer. The full details are below.

What’s in the new Super Mario Party update 2021 patch notes?

The new Super Mario Party online multiplayer update is here, completely out of the blue and without any fanfare. We really enjoyed Super Mario Party when we played it, but we made note of the limited online functionality available at the time. Now three years later, the game finally has near-complete online support.

Three major modes are playable online — Mario Party, Partner Party, and minigames Free Play. All characters and boards are available immediately in online play, so you don’t need to worry about unlocking them. It should be noted that while the majority of the game’s 80 minigames are available, ten have been removed, presumably because they only work having players in the same room together.

You’ll also need a paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription. It’s impossible to play with random people, incidentally, which is a bit of a shame. You can only set up a match between friends or people with a password you set. Up to four players can join, although bizarrely if two people want to play on one system with friends online, only one other system is allowed to connect.
