Nintendo addresses Breath of the Wild 2’s absence in today’s Direct

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 was missing from today’s Nintendo Direct, with it being notably absent despite many expecting to see more from the upcoming RPG. So where was Breath at the Wild 2 during today’s Direct event?

Why was Breath of the Wild 2 missing from the Nintendo Direct today?

Breath of the Wild’s 2 absence from the Nintendo Direct was mentioned by Eiji Aonuma, The Legend of Zelda series’ producer. Aonuma explained that while he knew that many would expect BotW2 news from him during the event, that wasn’t going to be the case.

“I’m sure a lot of you saw me and thought there might be news about the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game,” Aonuma said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have anything to show right now. We apologize. Development is proceeding smoothly and we should be able to bring you some new information this year. For now, we’ll have to ask you to wait just a bit longer.”

Given that Zelda’s 35th anniversary is coming up soon, many anticipated that Breath of the Wild 2 news could be released along with a potential 35th-anniversary collection for the series, similar to Super Mario 3D All-Stars. However, Nintendo instead revealed that a Skyward Sword remaster would be making its way to the Switch.

Nintendo not having anything to show for Breath of the Wild 2 suggests its release is still some way off, putting to rest suggestions that the game could be released before the last half of the year. While this was always an unlikely theory, it was surprising to only see Skyward Sword during the presentation, considering Zelda’s big upcoming anniversary.

Still, as we’ve seen with games like Cyberpunk 2077, it’s always better for a developer to continue working on a game rather than focusing on delivering a new trailer. If the lack of new Breath of the Wild 2 details means that Nintendo can spend more time making it, then that’s always a positive.
