Minecraft Smash Bros. crossover Creeper

Smash Ultimate Minecraft Steve DLC was a ‘massive challenge,’ Sakurai says

Minecraft crossover with Smash Ultimate has been revealed by Game Director Masahiro Sakurai in a new Direct video. Minecraft’s player character Steve will be added as a new Smash Ultimate DLC fighter in a forthcoming update that Sakurai called a “massive challenge.”

Nintendo’s fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been releasing a steady stream of post-launch content to keep fans interested, one of the most recent being Min Min from Arms. Now, a new character is on the way for one of Nintendo’s best-selling games: the next DLC fighter will be Steve from Minecraft.

Minecraft Steve is a ‘really unusual fighter’ in Smash Ultimate

Minecraft Smash Bros. crossover Enderman

The Minecraft Smash Bros. crossover brings Minecraft’s player character Steve to the game along with three alternate costumes: Alex, a Zombie, and the Enderman. Sakurai insinuated that Nintendo made the request for these characters to be added without truly realizing the technical work involved.

“They make it sound easy,” Sakurai said during the Smash Direct. “I guess they think this all happens by magic or something.”

Sakurai explained that adding the characters themselves was a simple enough process, but some of the new mechanics introduced by Steve necessitated a rework of all of the existing stages in Smash Ultimate. These changes were necessary to accommodate the new mechanics that Steve is introducing to the game.

The Minecraft Smash Ultimate reveal showcased a short look at Steve and his abilities, but it’s not an all-inclusive breakdown of the character. From what’s been shown thus far, it appears that Steve will be able to place blocks to use as platforms or defensive barricades — just as you would in Minecraft.

Steve may turn out to be a “really unusual fighter” according to Masahiro Sakurai, and that’s exactly why the character needs to be explored in more detail. Masahiro Sakurai will be appearing at a panel during the upcoming Minecraft Live event on October 3, 2020, at 10:30 AM EDT to show off more of this new fighter’s abilities and explain how it will shake up the world of Smash Ultimate. You can learn more about Steve in Smash Ultimate on the game’s official website.
