Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has been announced as a new The Legend of Zelda game. No, this is not The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, but it is going to be set in the same universe.
Previously, Hyrule Warriors was launched as part of a partnership between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo. This game brought Dynasty Warriors’ gameplay to The Legend of Zelda universe, and now that partnership will continue with a new entry in the franchise.
The Legend of Zelda’s franchise producer Eiji Aonuma has said that we’ll get to experience the “great calamity” that took place in Hyrule 100 years prior to the events in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While The Legend of Zelda has certainly hopped around to different timelines, this is one of the rare instances where we’re getting a direct prequel to a core game in the franchise.
100 years ago, Calamity Ganon made an appearance and threatened Hyrule with destruction. The good guys managed to put a stop to this threat by sealing Link within the Shrine of Resurrection while Princess Zelda kept him trapped within the castle. This world-changing event sets the stage for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — and now we’re going to experience it firsthand.
As one might expect, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will feature a playable Link and Zelda. For the first time ever, players will also be able to take on the roles of the four Champions as playable characters, too!
The classic Dynasty Warriors-style gameplay with massive battles will be the centerpiece of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, but that’s not all you’ll be doing in this game. You can also unlock weapons and skills, craft materials, visit shops, solve environmental puzzles, and use the power of the Sheikah Slate to defeat your enemies.
You’ll be able to play the new The Legend of Zelda game Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity when it launches for Nintendo Switch on November 20, 2020. You can find out more about this game on its official website.
