The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game town

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game looks surprisingly good

Daedalic has released some new screenshots and a teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game and it’s looking surprisingly good. This brand new adventure will let players take control of the iconic corrupted hobbit as he explores a new adventure based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings universe.

“We follow Tolkien’s story quite strictly and only take some freedom for purposes of gamification or sometimes simplification,” Narrative Designer Tilman Schanen said to IGN. “Tolkien doesn’t describe Gollum’s story before he appears in the book in great detail. So mainly, we draw from small notes in the appendices and second-hand reports from characters like Gandalf.”

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game will use Tolkien’s volumes of notes and details to flesh out a new original story using stealth gameplay. Gollum isn’t exactly a mighty warrior, and players will be spending most of their time running, hiding, and distracting enemies with sneaky tricks.

There will be a sort of branching narrative for you to explore, too, with choices made based on Gollum’s split personality. This is ultimately a prequel to The Lord of the Rings books, so he won’t be quite as corrupted as he is in the movies.

Daedalic hasn’t shown off any gameplay just yet, but they have revealed a teaser trailer that you can watch below. You’ll be able to play The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game when it launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X sometime in 2021.
