A Total War Saga: Troy Epic Games Store release gold

A Total War Saga: Troy will be Epic exclusive — and free to keep on Day 1

A Total War Saga: Troy Epic Games Store release has been announced by Sega and Creative Assembly as a one-year exclusive deal. What’s more, this is going to make for a radical experiment on the part of the developers: you’ll be able to get A Total War Saga: Troy free if you grab it on the first day of its release.

“We’re really excited about TROY, and we’re even more excited that this will give more of you the chance to play and enjoy it than might have had it otherwise,” stated a blog post on the Total War website. “While we know that some of you won’t like the Epic Games Store exclusivity, we feel like this is a great opportunity for us in a lot of ways, and we’re hoping that you’ll take some time to hear us out and for us to answer what some of the questions we think you might have.”

A Total War Saga games are distinct from the “core” releases of the franchise, and Creative Assembly likes to use them to try new things. In the case of A Total War Saga: Troy Epic Games Store release, they’re calling this an “experiment on a grand scale.”

As another part of this experiment, Creative Assembly will be making the game available completely for free, but only for a limited time. Those of you who grab it in the first 24 hours of its release will be able to keep the full game forever, no strings attached.

If you can’t tell from the name, this upcoming new game will focus on the legendary conflict between the kingdoms of Troy and Mycenaean Greece in the Trojan War. Players will be able to take on the roles of eight historical heroes in their battles. Thus far, Achilles and Hector have been revealed as playable characters.

Understandably, players might be concerned that this will represent a trend of Total War games being Epic exclusives. The blog post assures us that this experiment is a one-off; it has “no plans” for future games in the franchise to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
