Your PS4 download speed is about to be lowered if you live in Europe, although it’s for a very good reason. A lot of people are stuck at home under quarantine right now, and that’s causing concerns that the Internet (and by association, the PlayStation Network) may become badly overloaded.
“Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with internet service providers in Europe to manage download traffic to help preserve access for the entire internet community,” stated a PlayStation Blog post from SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan. “We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access.”

If you’re worried about lag in your games or something like that, it doesn’t appear that you’ll be affected. Rather, it seems that the majority of stress is coming from people downloading new purchases, game updates, and the like. After all, no amount of gameplay traffic can compare to downloading dozens of gigabytes of game data in a few hours.
Sony says that while you may experience “somewhat slower or delayed game downloads”, you should still be able to enjoy “robust gameplay.” The company hasn’t yet stated if they’ll be making similar reductions in PS4 download speed for the United States.
