Anthem relaunch touch

Anthem relaunch confirmed by BioWare, will rework game entirely

After a worrying amount of silence, an Anthem relaunch has been confirmed by BioWare. This heart-pounding online game has had a shaky start, but now it seems like Anthem might be getting back on track.

BioWare released a blog post detailing the Anthem relaunch. Their web servers were overloaded in about three minutes flat, but a well-prepared commenter on the /r/Games subreddit copied the text of the announcement in a discussion thread before the website went down.

The blog post opens with some praise for the developers and the work they’ve done over the last year. It also details some of the issues they’ve faced with stability and performance and the improvements that had to be made in those areas. A combination of these problems and fan feedback have led the devs to announce that they’ll be doing an Anthem relaunch.

“Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards – while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting,” the blog post stated. “And to do that properly we’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around – giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first.”

While this is certainly good news for fans who went all-in on Anthem, there is a downside. There are only so many development resources to go around, and this reworking of the core game mechanics means that they’re going to have to step away from doing full seasons of content.

That’s not to say that BioWare is abandoning Anthem in the meantime, mind — content will still be released in the coming weeks. What is the new Anthem content for the coming months?

  • events
  • store refreshes
  • revisiting past seasonal content
  • revisiting past cataclysm content

There’s also a hint of some kind of anniversary celebration, although they weren’t specific with the details.

As the blog post states, it’s going to take several months to get this done right. The Anthem players that remain have been awfully patient, and it looks like their patience might just pay off before the end of 2020.
