20 years after its original release, the original Digimon anime is being rebooted. This new Digimon Adventure anime will take the same beloved characters from the early aughts and feature them in an all-new story — and that’s not all that’s coming from the Digimon universe.
The new Digimon Adventure anime will be airing in Japan on Sundays at 9:00 AM starting sometime in April 2020. The anime will be aired on Fuji TV and will be replacing GeGeGe no Kitarou. This new anime will be taking place in the modern area and will focus on Tai, Agumon, and the other DigiDestined/Digimon pairs from the original series in an all-new story.

In this new anime, Tai’s mother and younger sister Hikari (who was also featured as a DigiDestined in the show’s original run) get trapped on a train that won’t stop moving. Tai runs off to Shibuya to help them but ultimately gets swept into the Digital World with the other Digidestined. The show is going to be directed by Masato Mitsuka who has previously served as episode director for Digimon Fusion.
A new Digimon card game will also be released sometime in the Spring of 2020, coinciding with the franchise’s 20th anniversary. A brand-new Digimon game is also on the way.
Titled Digimon Survive, this game combines tactical RPG gameplay with “a focus on storytelling” according to its game page on Bandai Namco Entertainment’s website. No specific release date for Digimon Survive has been announced as of yet, but it’s expected to launch for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020.
Curiously, this new Digimon game doesn’t have the same characters as the original franchise, although it does share many thematic similarities. The relaunch of the original series may mean that we’ll also be getting a new game featuring the first DigiDestined at some point in the future.
