Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play silently added in new update

Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play allegedly added in new update [Update: confirmed]

UPDATE: NetherRealm has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play is indeed real and is fittingly called “Krossplay.” You can read about the details at the bottom of the article.

Like most online games, Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play has been an oft-requested feature in the community as players from one system want to be able to beat down those on another system. While NetherRealm has only vaguely supported cross-play publicly, it looks like the team has added it in in the latest update. While no official patch notes currently exist, there PS4 system patch notes have an “Add Crossplay” bullet.

This update has come out of nowhere without any prior warning so it isn’t quite clear exactly how it works. However, given that the update is only on PS4 and Xbox One, it is likely that only those two consoles can play against each other, if at all. Since there have been no official word on how it works, it may not even be active yet. The Switch in particular is a unique case because of how poorly it can perform compared to its other peers.

Even though the official patch notes make no mention of cross-play (but the full update on Krossplay is here), it is very unlikely that this is a slip up even if no one from NetherRealm is publicly acknowledging it at the moment. If cross-play isn’t in this patch, it might be coming in the future.

The Game Awards are tonight so that show could possibly tie into all of this. Mortal Kombat 11 was revealed in a joke presentation by Ed Boon at the 2018 show so MK11 cross-play might be something Geoff Keighley announces as one of the big reveals. Regardless, The Game Awards 2019 start at 5:30 PM PT tonight, December 12.

This update also added the Raiden announcer pack, which players can get by signing up for WB’s newsletter. It also comes with 1,000 Time Krystals, the game’s microtransaction currency. It also fixed Kombat League points as players will no longer lose more that 50 KL points for a loss. Higher ranked players could often find themselves struggling to climb up the ranks because of the harsh loss penalties.

UPDATE: Krossplay has not been activated yet but will only support PS4 and Xbox One for the time being in Kasual matches (and not the competitive Kombat League). This means only Versus, King of the Hill, and A.I. Only will be effected along with specific Kasual rooms that will allow for Kasual private matches. However, this update doesn’t bring cross-platform progression. NetherRealm also gave no date on when this feature will go live. Players can opt into cross-play from the main online menu when highlighting the Kasual modes.
