Minecraft Bedrock PS4 edition brings cross-play to consoles

The Minecraft Bedrock PS4 edition has been announced by Mojang, finally bringing a somewhat different version of Minecraft to the PlayStation 4. What’s the difference between this and the existing version on the PS4? Well, the Minecraft Bedrock PS4 version will allow for cross-play between AndroidiOSNintendo SwitchWindows 10, and Xbox One.

A post on the PlayStation Blog has announced the arrival of the Bedrock edition of Minecraft for the PS4. It brings with it several neat new features, one of which happens to be the aforementioned cross-play. That’s not all, though — for the first time, PlayStation 4 players will have access to the Minecraft Marketplace.

The new PS4 version is going to be up to Version 1.14 of this branch of the game, meaning that there will finally be bees available in the game for all to enjoy. You’ll certainly be quite the busy bee with all of the new content that’s coming to the game in 1.14, and it really is all about the bees! The update will also include the highly-versatile honey block, a  deceptively simple piece of kit that’s been shaking up the Redstone engineering world in PC beta testing.

Although Minecraft has sold millions and millions of copies, all of the involved parties are being rather fair with existing PS4 owners. Anyone who currently owns the game on the PlayStation 4 will be upgraded to the Minecraft Bedrock PS4 edition at no charge whatsoever. The update will never expire, and all future purchases beyond the December 10, 2019, release date on the PS4 are going to be this different version of the game.

There is, however, one caveat — everyone who wishes to play together must be updated to the Minecraft Bedrock 1.14 patch. If you have friends on other consoles that you want to play with and they’ve been sitting on their butts instead of updating their game, you might want to give them a gentle reminder to get their game updated right away.
