League of Legends anime, card game rumored to be announced at 10th anniversary

League of Legends anime and League of Legends card game are rumored to be on the way in time for the game’s 10th anniversary. We don’t know much about what this rumored anime series will be like, but the card game will reportedly be called Legends of Runeterra.

Esports commentator Rod “Slasher” Breslau has stated that he has sources who have the skinny on some of the big reveals for the League of Legends 10th Anniversary celebrations. Among the numerous cool goodies to be launched — one of which is likely to be the mobile version of the game — is a League of Legends anime and a card game.

“Riot Games will announce a new digital card game titled ‘Legends of Runeterra’ during the League of Legends 10th Anniversary event today, sources tell me,” Mr. Breslau said on Twitter. “Riot Games is also developing an ANIME set in the world of League of Legends, also to be announced today at their 10th anniversary event, sources tell me[.] [The] League of Legends mobile game is also expected to be launching today, with pre-registration links for the game in China and Brazil exposed before quickly taken down by Riot[.]”

League of Legends anime could be a massive hit, especially in Asia where the game is much more popular than in the West. The sheer number of characters available in the franchise allows for a lot of flexibility for writers to get really creative with their storylines. It also has the side benefit of adding a unique way for new skins or Legends to be introduced.

Legends of Runeterra, however, may be an altogether trickier prospect. While a League of Legends card game might have performed solidly five years ago, the landscape of digital collectible card gaming has changed significantly ever since the launch of HearthstoneGwentMagic: The Gathering ArenaArtifact, and countless other indie CCGs are out there, ready to compete with this rumored game.

While it won’t be too long before we find out the facts, please do bear in mind that this is a rumor that we can’t independently verify. As always, take it with a grain of salt. One hopes this one turns out to be true — a League of Legends anime could be pretty cool.
