$150 PSN Avatar

Sony seemingly removes $150 PSN avatar for $8 PS4 indie game

The indie game State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem first hit PS4 back in August of 2018, yet recently a whole host of purchasable profile pictures relating to the game appeared on the PlayStation Store. Nestled among 26 other benign images was one $150 PSN avatar depicting what appeared to be an Arabian prince comprised of solid gold.

This depiction in itself could prove to be controversial, as it partially has in the Reddit thread discussing this extortionate digital image, but most of the outrage and pointed jokes are simply aimed towards the transparent moneymaking attempt from those responsible at developer Lapovich Team.

Some users pondered all of the excellent games they could purchase instead of using $150.95 to secure the Golden Prince avatar on PSN, while another user joked (we hope) that they’d only pick it up in a 50% off sale. The trouble is, with notoriety surrounding the avatar building, it was perhaps only a matter of time until some PlayStation players forked over their money in exchange for the status it might bring in online lobbies.

As such—presumably at the hands of Sony, as some Redditors were calling for—the $150 PSN avatar has swiftly been removed. The other State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem avatars remain, costing either $0.99 or $1.99 in all of their blue and white glory, not a spec of gold in sight.

Of course, it’s also possible that the independent developers gauged the negative early response and subsequently asked for it to be removed themselves. Arguably more harm to their reputation would come from the expensive image than good that it might do to their account balance, assuming a select few did elect to purchase the Golden Prince.

Either way, we can likely all agree that $150.95 is far too much to ask for a small PNG to adorn your PlayStation profile.
