Spider-Man Far From Home Easter Egg references PS4 game, and Insomniac loves it

Spider-Man Far From Home contains a Spider-Man PS4 Easter Egg, with the recently released movie offering a subtle nod in the direction of Insomniac Games’ PS4 exclusive game. While it’s unlikely that the secret would be spotted by those who haven’t played the game, its developers were understandably thrilled to see their work acknowledged on the big screen, with the Insomniac team reportedly giving the moment an ovation during their screening.

Warning: Spider-Man Far From Home spoilers below!

At the end of Spider-Man Far From Home, our hero is web-swinging around in his newly acquired black-and-red spider suit, before taking a selfie while bypassing New York’s skyscrapers. As he does so, he throws up a peace sign.

This is a clear throwback to Spider-Man PS4’s Photo Mode, which allows players to snapshot themselves while navigating the 2018 game’s open-world setting. In promotional material, Spider-Man was shown waving the peace sign while stopping to take photos, with players also able to have Peter Parker flash the symbol in the game.

Additionally, in a post-credits scene, J. Jonah Jameson reappears (played by J.K. Simmons, reprising his role from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films) in order to share a post-humous video from the villainous Mysterio, who frames Spider-Man for the events in London along with revealing the superhero’s identity.

While J. Jonah Jameson is still affiliated with The Daily Bugle in Far From Home, he is now leading up an InfoWars-esque conspiratorial web series, similar to Spider-Man PS4‘s radio show Just the Facts. With this radio show, Insomniac modernized the J. Jonah Jameson character as a fiery conspiracy theorist, and it appears that Far From Home‘s writers have taken their cues from the PS4 game.

Insomniac Games developer Mike Yosh tweeted out a photo of Insomniac Games attending a screening of Far From Home, before fellow Insomniac dev Mary Kenney added that the team met the Easter Egg with an ovation.

“That moment when we ALL burst into applause at the Spider-Man PS4 reference,” she tweeted.

Spider-Man Far From Home isn’t directly related to the PS4 game, which doesn’t fit into the same canon as the MCU version of Spider-Man. However, the game has received a new DLC update in which Far From Home skins have been added to it, in celebration of the release of the new movie. This DLC update is available to download right on PS4.

Spider-Man Far From Home released in theaters on July 2, 2019.
