Doom 64 Switch release date

Doom 64 Switch release date announced

Bethesda announced a Doom 64 Switch release date, bringing the Nintendo 64 shooter to another console for the first time since it was released in 1997. Doom 64 will come to the Nintendo Switch later this year. The Doom 64 Switch release date is set for November 22, 2019. This happens to be the same release date as Doom Eternal, the sequel to 2016’s Doom reboot.

Bethesda’s Pete Hines appeared on today’s Nintendo Direct to announce the Doom 64 Switch port. The announcement came with footage of the Switch release. As a port, it appears to features an upgraded resolution, and the footage shown appears to run smoothly enough, but doesn’t seem to have any other kind of graphical improvements. A Doom 64 PS4 and PC release was rumored after a now-deleted ratings board post, but there’s been no official word on a Doom 64 rerelease until now.

The Doom 64 port follows Bethesda’s release of the original Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One during E3 2019. The ports of Doom and Doom 2 saw much criticism at launch as a result of the inclusion of DRM, requiring a mandatory Bethesda account login in order to play. Digital Foundry also found several technical problems with the first two games’ releases, including an altered aspect ratio that makes enemies appear squished and poor sound conversion that results in slowed music playback. Bethesda previously brought the Doom 2016 reboot to Switch in 2017, which, despite the Switch’s lower power, ended up being a surprisingly good port.

During today’s Direct, Nintendo made several big announcements. Along with a Tokyo Mirage Sessions Switch release date and the announcement of a Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Nintendo unveiled Deadly Premonition 2, a sequel to the 2010 survival horror game. Nintendo also announced Nintendo Switch Online SNES games, finally bringing some of the 16-bit console’s classic titles to the Switch.
